As you could guess from the name, it is a long, clean beach, easily accessible for pedestrians and cyclists, and is lined with several large parks that provide a great picnic spot. There is also the option to visit some of the natural areas along the Gold Coast, as there is a waterfront path leading to Burleigh Heads National Park.
Coolangatta Beach is great for swimming, but families who want to swim should stay away as the beach itself is nothing great and aspiring surfers would be best served at surf hotspots such as Duranbah, D-Bah and D’Bah Beach. Coolangatta beach can be good for surfing, although Duransbah is all about the waves. For bodyboarders on short boards who can achieve a great set – until it rolls in – there is also the option to check out D-Bah if you are looking for a destination on the Gold Coast and want to feel safe doing what you can.
The beach front has recently undergone a major renovation, which has helped to beautify the beach presentation even further. Currumbin beach is a nice balance between a family destination and a barbecue area, with its alleyways offering many sheltered areas for families as well as a variety of restaurants and bars. The beach itself is regularly patrolled by Surf Life Saving volunteers and is also adjacent to Broadbeach Surf School, which offers surf lessons and training. It is also regularly and heavily monitored by volunteers who rescue surfing and patrols a number of other popular spots on the Gold Coast such as D’Bah Beach.
It offers decent surfing, with good waves that occur in clear easterly winds, but surfers simply need to find a good bank and surf the shore at high tide to get a powerful, clean ride. There are a number of good surf breaks on the beach, as well as a variety of surf shops and restaurants, and there are plenty of opportunities to surf at high tide during the shore breaks.
