New Jersey is known as the Garden State because of the delicious fruits and vegetables it produces on its farms. Known as an industrial hub, it earned its nickname the Garden State because of its proximity to New York City and the Sandy Hook bee. New Jersey is a leading producer of cranberries, blueberries and tomatoes.

If you don’t fancy going for a full dinner in New Jersey you can easily find breakfast and bagel shops. Most major food outlets in New Jersey have their own bakery on the site.

The Garden State Parkway serves as the main highway between New York City and New Jersey, but there are also many alternative routes throughout the state.

The Atlantic City Expressway is a toll road that passes through Atlantic City while the highway ends in Philadelphia.

Travellers should also be aware of Interstate 295, which connects Trenton with Delaware and Philadelphia and runs through the centre of the city and the Jersey coast.

There are parts of the state where it is very rural, such as northern New Jersey and the southern half of Jersey City. These are the areas that people who live and work in New York and Philadelphia go to relax.

Most of New Jersey’s population lives in New York City and surrounding counties such as Jersey City, Newark and Camden. Many people who work in New York or Philadelphia commute by train, car or bus.

You can expect crowded highways and angry motorists, New Jersey is famous for its traffic jams, especially in the late afternoon and early morning. The state occasionally restricts vehicles to only travel in one direction, so expect crowded roads and occasional delays due to traffic jams.

New Jersey does not recognise state gun licenses, so use common sense and discretion and do not import firearms into the state unless you have consulted with a professional in New Jersey prior to traveling. Carrying a gun is a crime, so be careful.

New Jersey’s laws on hitchhiking are notoriously ambiguous. However, lots of people do hitchhike, but you may be harassed by the local police.

New Jersey is one of two states that do not allow self-service stations (the other is Oregon), but don’t worry, these are the only two states where self-service does not exist, the prices are often lower than in surrounding states, so you may want to head past the border to fill up when you can.

New Jersey is densely populated, making it one of the largest states in the United States with a population of more than 1.3 million people. Interestingly, it is the second largest state in terms of population density (after New York) and the third most populous state after California.

Although New Jersey ranks 46th as a state, it has the fourth highest median income of any state ($47,000 per person) and has had a higher median income than any other state for the last 30 years.

The state packs many people into a relatively small area, it does so by creating a lot of manufacturing jobs. New Jersey has a large urban population because it attaches great importance to manufacturing and the most important role it has played in the country’s history.
