Ala Kul is an alpine lake in the Terskey-Alatau mountains in Kyrgyzstan, about 30 km north of the capital Osh. It is a popular destination for hiking, mountain biking, snowcapping, skiing and snowshoeing in the Terke and Al-Atau Mountains and hosts the largest snowmobile park in the world in Uzbekistan. Located in the mountains, the glaciated Ala Kul Lake is beautiful and can only be reached on foot, but it is reached via a steep hike that usually takes more than a day. Between Ala – Kul and Altyn Arashan there is also a very steep rise and fall, and it is steep. I would say that the most difficult part of the hike is the stretch between the lake and the Ala Kul pass. In my opinion, the best and easiest way to reach Ala Kul is a 4-day hike that first leads through the Karakol Valley. After two full days of hiking, we head to the other side of the Altyn Arashan Pass, where we are rewarded with a sore muscle in the hot springs of Altyn Arashan. If you start your hike at the entrance of this park south of Karaksol, you can hike to ala – kol and stay in the hot spring. Al tyn – Arashesan for the rest of your trip. Sources: 1, 3, 7

It is also possible to walk from the other side of the Altyn Arashan Pass to Ala Kul and from there hike to Chatyr Kul Lake, which offers a fantastic view from its pass. If you extend your trip, you can also stay overnight in Ala – Kul and combine this with a trip to Kol – Suu Lake. If you extend the trip, you can even spend a night in Altyn Arashan for about 30 euros per day or for a small group of up to 10 people for the Ala Kul Trek from Karakol. For a longer trip, this trip can be combined with another trip on Lake Ko Suu, or if you extend the trips, you should also combine it with an extra day of hiking or camping on the other side. Cholpan is the first yurt camp on the left when you enter Altyn Arashan, and if you enter from Ak – Suu, it is the second one you will reach during the hike. If you are hiking in Ala – Kul, you should remember that it is possible to do the hike without a tent.
