Just 100 metres away is the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, where temporary exhibitions are designed to reflect the local landscape, including local landscapes. Bathurst was the site of Australia’s first permanent refugee camp, which received more than 100,000 migrants between 1948 and 1952. Sources: 5

Despite the difficult conditions, the first New Australian Opera Company was founded and Tosca performed at the migrant camp in Bathurst, and there was positive coverage of the country. The Macquarie River is named after Governor Lachlan Macquarie, the MacQuarie Mountains after the Governor of New South Wales and the Bathurst Plains after Lordbathurst. State surveyor George Evans first saw them when he crossed the Blue Mountains that same year. A fence post indicating where Governor Macquarie declared the city of Bathurst on May 7, 1815, was located on Stanley Street. There is a richly decorated Victorian Munro drinking fountain, imported from England in 1891 and named after the then mayor, and a plaque commemorating Charles Darwin’s visit to Bathurst in 1840 and 1836. The announcement at Bend meant Queensland Raceway was unable to race a Supercars round for the first time since 1999, but the series will return to Bathurst this year after an astonishing turnaround in a series that snubbed Australia’s biggest motorsport complex while juggling a decimated calendar. With three races, including a night race in the new light of SMSP and trekking through camps as diverse as SeaWorld, thousands of fans from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States will gather and stay there over the weekend. The omission from the track brought a sharp rebuke from owner Sam Shahin, who suggested that Supercars owe South Australia a big apology. In 2000, he finally agreed to donate the 10,000 pieces to the Australian Museum, which is legally obliged to keep them in the Somerville Collection rather than permanently exhibit them in a museum in Bathurst.
