I recently offered to test the latest Sonic racing game for Apple Arcade and let’s jump into Team Sonic Racing and see how it stacks up against previous games. Sources: 5

The first Sonic from Sega has set up the formula: you are a erratic, fast kart driver and the race is up to you. Team Sonic Racing is the latest in a long line of Sonic racing games from Sonic the Hedgehog, but this title steps away from its predecessor and focuses exclusively on Sonic and Friends. As far as gameplay is concerned, Team Sega’s latest entry in the Sonic series is all about gameplay while stepping outside the established formula. Sources: 3, 4, 7, 14

When Team Sonic Racing was founded, the game offered countless possibilities to play, including a single player campaign, but it also offered one thing that most other kart games do not: a multiplayer mode. Sources: 8, 17

In single player, Team Sonic Racing offered a fairly standard batch mode, which included a single player campaign and a multiplayer mode with up to four players in team mode. Sources: 17

If you want to get your skills on the net with Team Sonic Racing, you can compete in a single race with up to 12 players in four teams, or if you don’t feel like it, you can play it as a standard kart driver. But once a player has become familiar with the rules of the game, he can become one of the most unique racers around. With the expected online chaos of online racing and the opportunity to compete with 12 players as four teams, Team sonic Racing offers a great mix of competitive racing with a variety of different modes and game modes. Team Sonic Racing differs from traditional kart racing in another feature: Players are part of a team race and win races by efficiency rather than speed. Sources: 4

While the game can be played as a solo racer, Team Sonic Racing tries to stay ahead of the crowd with its team racing mode. Players choose a single racer (Sonic, Blaze or Eggman) and go on the track, but their main attraction is the team – based racing and the ability to compete as a single player. While the players in Team Sega Racing can race alone, their main focus is on a team of three racers who will fight together for the victory. There are a few other options for single player races, such as co-op or team races, and there is even an option for a multiplayer mode with up to four players. Sources: 2, 10, 11, 16

While racing games have traditionally been all about being the fastest player on the track, Team Sonic Racing focuses on teamwork. While the other kart drivers are also tied to other races such as the Super Mario Kart series and Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Team Sega Racing stands out from the crowd with its team racing mode and ability to work together. While it is not perfect and has some annoyances here and there, Team Sonic Race is a pleasant journey into the Sonic Universe. The landscape in Team Sega Racing looks wonderful and is often described as one of the most beautiful landscapes in all Sonic the Hedgehog games. Sources: 5, 13

As mentioned earlier, Team Sonic Racing has online game and with it you can team up with friends and take on any of the twenty – one title in the game. Now that you know what credits are and how to earn them in Team Sega Racing, be sure to read our guide to how long it takes to beat Team Adventure mode in them. I was able to race a few races before I tried it out and I’m pretty happy with the results. Sources: 5, 11, 19

Overall, Team Sonic Racing is a good game with good handling, but its biggest problem is that it lacks the same level of customization as some of the other competing titles in the series. What makes it all a nonsense is that Team Sega Racing Transforming Karts, the game’s most important racing mode, is perhaps the best kart racing game ever. Sources: 2, 12

Sumo Digital, the developer of the game, still gets a crack at making racing games, and they took a very unique approach with Team Sonic Racing. Few developers have perfected the art of arcade handling – style handling like sumo, but it’s a surprisingly fun speed feast that pays tribute to Sega’s heroes past and present. Sources: 0, 18

Team Sonic Racing was developed by Sumo Digital, who previously worked on Team Sonic racing games such as Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Transforming Sonic. It features Sonic characters because the team wanted to expand the world and character roster of the series. Unlike everything in earlier Sonic racing game, the storyline of Team Sega Racing is relatively manageable, but not without its share of surprises. Sources: 4, 7
